The Great Migration: February 2018 in Tanzania
11-DAYS EXPLORING TARANGIRE, LAKE MANYARA, SERENGETI, NDUTU AND NGORONGORO CRATER
February is a fantastic time in Tanzania: Witness The Great Migration of Wildebeest as they travel to the Southern Serengeti/Ndutu region to give birth to their calves. It’s a grand spectacle that attracts wildlife enthusiasts and big cats alike. See cheetahs, lions, and leopards up close and in action, hunting their prey.
DAY 1: ARRIVE ARUSHA
Arrive in Arusha where you will be greeted at Kilimanjaro Airport and escorted to your hotel. Most international flights arrive at night. If you choose to arrive in the morning or the day before, you will have the added option to experience Arusha. Explore the curio shops, boutiques and art gallery at Cultural Heritage Centre, or enjoy lunch at the Arusha Coffee Lodge where you can also visit Shanga, a cultural project that employs people with disabilities to create unique, high-quality hand-blown glassware and jewelry using recycled materials. If you can't wait to start safari, visit Arusha National Park for a spectacular view of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's tallest mountain. Service is our specialty! We will be there every step of the way to help guide you, and we'll set everything up according to your preferences so you can relax and enjoy your adventure!
DAY 2: TRAVEL TO TARANGIRE
After breakfast, depart to Tarangire National Park. Located two hours southwest of Arusha, Tarangire is a large river valley lined with granite ridges and dotted with swamps. It's famed for its large herds of elephants (the greatest concentration in Africa) and enormous baobab trees, but it's also a bird-lovers' haven with over 550 species of birds. During game drives, you are guaranteed to see elephants, but you may also see lions, leopards, cheetah, gazelle, buffalo, caracal, and of course mongoose-filled termite mounds that dot the landscape. Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch followed by an afternoon game drive.
DAY 3: TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
Full day of game viewing in Tarangire.
DAY 4: TRAVEL TO LAKE MANYARA
After an early breakfast and check-out, enjoy a game drive from Tarangire to Lake Manyara, an area known for its tree-climbing lions and what Ernest Hemingway described as Africa's loveliest lake. Baboons, hippos, giraffes, elephants, and the ever-elusive leopard all call this area home. Arrive at camp in time for lunch, then enjoy an afternoon nature-walk to the lake for the chance to see flamingos, giraffes, zebras, and other animals, all in close proximity. Those needing a break may forego the walk and relax by the pool overlooking the lake, though you may have to move over for the giraffes!
DAY 5: TRAVEL TO SERENGETI
After an early breakfast, set off for Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Renowned worldwide for its incredible scenery and magnificent wildlife, the park is home to the "Big Five" (elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, and leopard), as well as cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, and the Annual Migration of two million wildebeest. The Southern Plains give rise to the large, granite rock formatons of the Moru Kopjes. Spend full days in search of big cats and other animals, taking in the splendor that surrounds you.
DAY 6: SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
Full day of game viewing in the Serengeti.
DAY 7: TRAVEL TO NDUTU (NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA)
Depart after breakfast and set off for Ndutu, a part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area that shares the Southern Serengeti ecosystem. Off-road driving is allowed here, giving you a front-row seat to Nature at her finest. Millions of wildebeest will call this area home for the next few weeks as they give birth to their babies. All the big cats, especially cheetahs and lions, follow the herds to enjoy a wide selection of prey. Witness the Cycle of Life, as some wildebeests are born, while others fall victim to their predators.
DAYS 8-9: NDUTU (NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA)
Full days of game viewing in Ndutu/Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
DAY 10 - DESCENT INTO NGORONGORO CRATER:
Arise early morning for breakfast and your descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, perhaps the prettiest place in all of Tanzania. Often referred to as "Africa's Garden of Eden," the crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered by many to be the Eighth Wonder of the World. It's the largest un-flooded and unbroken caldera on Earth, formed when a large volcano exploded and collapsed on itself two to three million years ago. Now, it's home to over 30,000 animals, including all members of The Big Five. You will enjoy a full day game drive along with a picnic lunch with the hippos at the Hippo Pool before beginning your ascent to your lodge, which overlooks the crater's rim.
DAY 11 - RETURN TO ARUSHA:
Travel back to Arusha where you can choose to travel home, or stay on to enjoy one of our travel extensions, such as the relaxing beaches of Zanzibar, or Gorilla Trekking in Uganda.
